Motorcycle exhausts create some of the most adrenaline-rushing sounds if you're a motorcycle enthusiast. If you own a motorcycle, chances are you've experienced a backfire in the exhaust, which can cause quite a jolt for an unsuspecting rider. When a motorcycle backfires, a malfunction in your motorcycle engine mechanics is evident. By understanding why backfires happen and knowing the methods of prevention, you can keep your motorcycle running like a dream.
What problems can a bad stator cause: Bike Chat Forums Index- The Workshop. 14:58 - 29 Dec 2013 Post subject: what problems can a bad stator cause: Hi all just wondering what problems can a bad stator cause Thanks all. Back to top: You must be logged in to rate posts. Hence you can get shitty running, backfiring etc. It can also fry. Backfiring is certainly not a good thing for your bike but it usually depends on the type of backfire. How bad or huge the bike backfires is based usually on the combustion sound. If it is cough like a simple sound, this is not that bad for the bike’s engine. But it can be alarming for you because it will get stronger and worse over time.
What Is a Backfire?
A backfire is an explosion that occurs either in the intake or in the exhaust of your motorcycle. This explosion is supposed to occur in the combustion chamber, and when it doesn't, there is an interruption in your engine's operation. It is possible to see a short-lived flame coming from the exhaust. Whether it happens in the intake or exhaust, the loud noise that results can be momentarily startling to the rider and those nearby.
What Causes Backfire?

When the engine on your motorcycle has an emission system malfunction, such as an exhaust leak or a moment of running rich or running lean, backfire can occur.
When an engine is running rich, there is more fuel present than there is air. When an engine is running lean, there is more air than there is fuel. In either case, the result is an incomplete combustion where the fuel is ignited by the heat of the exhaust, causing the loud, popping noise.
The stock muffler that comes on a motorcycle is designed specifically to ensure the complete and proper operation of the engine. When an exhaust pipe is changed, this causes an unbalanced air-to-fuel ratio. The airflow into the motorcycle is increased because of the difference in pipe design and other specifics. This difference causes backfire in the exhaust.
Other causes of backfire are bad or weak fuel pumps, low fuel pressure, or clogged fuel filters. All three of these issues have a direct effect on the air-to-fuel ratio.
Tips to Prevent Backfire
There are multiple ways to stop a bike from backfiring that vary from inspecting and properly maintaining certain parts of a chopper to adding or replacing specific fluids.
Check Your Carburetor
Fuel can not flow properly through a dirty carburetor; this will cause a lean-running engine. If the carburetor is dirty, clean it with a high grade carburetor cleaner.
Check Your Jets
Jets clogged with debris can also prevent fuel from getting through the engine properly. If this is the case, your engine will run lean.
Add Fuel Injector Cleaner
If your motorcycle is fuel injected, using a high grade cleaner will help remove the dirt and debris trapped in your fuel lines. Consult your motorcycle's owner's manual for usage of a fuel injector cleaner for your model.
Change Fuel Grade
A low-rated fuel in your motorcycle can also contribute to dirty or clogged lines. A higher grade fuel can help to clear fuel lines and keep your fuel tank clean.

This is an over-simplification but here goes: In a combustionengine fuel and air mixture goes into the cylinder chamber, afterwhich it is compressed by the 'plunger' part of the cylinder thatcauses rotation in the crankshaft as it goes up and down. When theplunger is up deep inside the chamber, the sparkplug lets off aspark, causing the compressed fuel and air mixture to ignite andexplode, sending the plunger part back down with great force......this process repeats over and over again causing rotation...After the explosion occurs inside the chamber, the burnt residue isejected through an exhaust line. The timing here is very importantand that's why engines are calibrated to open the fuel/air line, compress the plunger, ignite the spark, eject the burnt residue...So... As I understand it, backfiring occurs when the fuel/airmixture fails to ignite inside the chamber and is ejected out theexhaust line and is caused to explode there. For some reason thisis more common during decceleration as opposed to acceleration. AndI do not know what causes it to ignite inside the exhaust TO STARTOFF WITH YOU ARE CORRECT NOW. WHAT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO BACK FIREDURING DECELERATION ESPECIALLY IN A V TWIN IS AIR. SOME MOTORCYCLESARE EQUIPPED WITH AIR CUTOFF VALVES SUCH ASHONDA,YAMAHA,KAWASAKI,SUZUKI ETC. IF THE AIR CUT OFF VALVES WERENOT PRESENT THERE WOULD BE ALOT MORE BACKFIRING DURING DECELERATIONTHE BACK FIRE DURING DECELERATION IS CAUSED BY THE UN BURNT FUELTHAT IS BRIEFLY SUCKED BACK INTO THE CYLIDER DURING EXHAUSATOVERLAP WHEN THE EXHAUST AND INTAKE VALVES ARE OPEN AT BRIEFLY THESAME TIME. NOW WHEN THE INTAKE AIR PLATE IS CLOSED SOMETIMES KNOWNAS THE BUTTERFLY AIR/OXYGEN CAN STILL BE SUCKED THROUGH THE PILOTAIR JET WHEN DECELERATING THE ENGINE BRIEFLY LOSES VACCUME THENSESHUTTING THE AIR CUT OFF VALVE ON MOST CYCLES IF YOUR ENGINE ISIMPROPERLY TUNED THEN YOUR INTAKE AIR PLATE WILL BE OPEN MORE ONIDLE AND LET IN MORE AIR CAUSING BACKFIRING. MOST CYCLES WIL NOTBACKFIRE IF YOU PULL IN THE CLUTCH WHICH IS THE PROPER WAY TODECELERATE ANYWAY. DECELERATING BY ENGINE BRAKING IS VERY DAMAGINGTO THE ENGINE ESPECIALLY TIMING CHAINS IF EQUIPPED ALWAYS PULL INTHE CLUTCH WHEN COMING TO A STOP THIS WILL CAUSE LESS ENGINE DAMAGEUSE YOUR BRAKES THEY ARE CHEAPER TO REPLACE THEN MAJOR ENGINECOMPONENTS. IF THE ENGINE IS BACKFIRING WHILE ACCELERATING YOU AREPROBLABLY OUT OF TIME

1982 Honda cb900 custom and it backfires when you let of on the throttle what causes this?
I have the same bike, same year. First I'd say, is it really backfiring (small explosions in the tailpipes) or more 'popping' when you let off the gas? I think backfires might be more common on giving an engine gas, not letting up... Mine was popping (which I originally referred to as 'backfiring', as well), and the diagnoses was that the engine was running lean, and when I had the carbs cleaned, it went away… Read More

What causes a 1973 Pontiac 350 engine to backfire through the exhaust?
A large backfire is most likely caused by a bad spark plug or plug wire. Unburned air and fuel pumped into the exhaust will often be ignited by the other cylinders still burning exhaust gases. Also check your ignition timing, if it is late and you have a rich mixture you can get a backfire. An exhaust leak will let air enter the exhaust under deceleration and cause a 'popping' sound. Why do dogs bark and attempt to chase motorcycles?
Some dogs chase in general. The vehicle doesn't matter. It can be a scooter, skateboard, bicycle, motorcycle, car, truck, RV or Semi Tractor with a Trailer. But there are dogs that will chase a loud noise such as a motorcycle with loud exhaust pipes. The sound of those loud pipes hurts their ears and causes them to have an Anxiety attack which causes them to chase the loud noise. Read More

What causes backfire when starting engine?
'Backfiring' is usually caused by a spark plug 'sparking' when it isn't its turn and the exhaust valve is open. If your air/fuel mixture is too rich, and you have unburned fuel in the exhaust system; cross firing from one spark plug wire to another can occur. If they are touching each other and when this happens while the exhaust valve is open, it will ignite the rich / unburned mixture in the exhaust manifold… Read More

There can be several different causes. Basically, it can be the ignition system or the carburetor. Too much oxygen in proportion to gasoline will cause backfiring. There are other possibilities, but I would suggest a geneal tune up and inspection of the… Read More
